December 2005 – Salinity Issues in Arizona
Where are our future water supplies? Many potential supplies, such as brackish groundwater
and reused water, are impacted by salinity. A common base of understanding of the area's salinity
issues and options is a necessary component of water resource planning in the Phoenix metropolitan
area.
Reclamation's Phoenix Area Office, under the direction of Ms. Erwin, works to realize the federal
objective in water resource planning by achieving a structured approach to water resource problemsolving
and by providing a rational framework for sound decision-making. Reclamation works with
communities, organizations, and states to assist them in the planning process; conducts general
investigations, appraisal and feasibility studies; can provide technical assistance; and investigates
opportunities for reuse of wastewater.
The Bureau of Reclamation is helping Arizona work on the problems associated with imported water
from the Colorado River, local water sources, reused water and brackish groundwater. Finding a
solution to brine management, developing affordable technologies for treatment, and overcoming
attitudes towards reuse are just some of the issues that affect our future water supplies in Arizona.
